Let’s talk about how long you have to capture the attention of the person who happens to click over to your website, first, though. If you don’t get that, you won’t even care if you have a hero. And personally, I need a hero in my life. So here’s the shocking truth: You have seven seconds or less to capture the attention of your reader. Seven. That’s not very long. Longer than flipping through titles on Netflix, but not really long enough to win them over with your insane humor or your beautiful products. That’s why you need a website hero section. And why it needs to be attention grabbing.
In the digital realm, your website’s hero section is the virtual handshake, the moment your audience decides whether to stay or move on. It’s your chance to make an unforgettable first impression. Let’s dive into the world of website heroes and explore how to craft an impactful introduction that keeps visitors engaged.
The hero section is the top part of your website that immediately grabs attention. It typically includes a headline, subheadline, and a captivating visual element. Think of it as the cover of a compelling book, enticing visitors to explore further. Here on Willow Lane Creative I’ve carefully chosen a photo and headline that I think will help people know who I am and what I’m here to do:
A hero that shines on desktop but fizzles on mobile is a missed opportunity. Ensure that your hero section is responsive, providing an equally stunning experience on smartphones and tablets.
Once you get your image/video loaded into the section at the top of your website, look at it on your computer in multiple browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox) and then look at it on your phone and even check it out on a tablet.
You may have one image with text on it, or it may be a section of the website that has multiple layers. If your website platform has the capability for a video and you have great footage, this would be a very impactful place to place it to get the most bang for your buck. Lead with your best!
Your hero image or video is the visual narrative of your brand. It tells the story of your business. Choose visuals that resonate with your message and identity. High-quality, relevant imagery establishes an immediate emotional connection and sets the tone for the visitor’s experience. Will this be stock photography? If you can help it, just say no, especially if your small business involves a physical location or products. But it will do in a pinch to help you get started.
Fifteen years ago, this would have meant hiring a photographer, but today it may be as simple as getting out your phone, hitting up YouTube for a quick tutorial on lighting and backgrounds and snapping some pictures.
Is a professional branding photographer worth it? Absolutely. Do I know a guy? You bet! Check out Zach Benson Creative (He did my photos and we had a great time doing it!). Or find someone in your area that specializes in brand photography.
Your headline should be concise, impactful, and immediately communicate the core value or message of your website. Use powerful, action-oriented language that addresses the needs or aspirations of your target audience. This is not the time to be a passive wallflower. People who visit your website want to know exactly two things:
Your headline and website hero section should answer those questions.
Be proud of what you have to offer, don’t downplay it. Maybe you are an interior designer with mad skills, or maybe you sell an amazing line of handmade candles. Maybe you’re a social media influencer for all kinds of fashion and beauty products or maybe you run a fitness studio. Whether you’re providing a service or selling a product, the questions remain the same.
Every hero needs a quest, and your Call to Action is the invitation to embark on that journey. Whether it’s “Explore Our Services,” “Start Your Free Trial,” or “Shop Now,” your CTA should be clear, compelling, and aligned with your business goals.
Resist the temptation to overcrowd your hero section with excessive text or multiple CTAs. Embrace a minimalist approach that prioritizes clarity and elegance. A clean design allows your message to resonate without distraction.
By embracing a strategic and creative approach, you can craft a hero section that not only captivates visitors but also guides them toward meaningful interactions with your brand. It’s not just a design element; it’s the opening act of a digital journey that leaves a lasting impression.
